Overview

GdB was hired by the MTA Long Island Railroad (LIRR) to provide various land surveying services as part of a large-scale design-build project for a proposed expansion from Floral Park to Hicksville, NY. As part of NYS Governor Cuomo’s initiative to transform and expand New York’s regional transportation infrastructure, MTA LIRR aims to extend roughly 9.8 miles of track with the installation of a third track line, elimination of all seven grade crossings along the route, installation of retaining and sound attenuation walls and to provide various station improvements and modifications.

GdB Value

GdB provided over 10 miles of right-of-way survey between Floral Park and Hicksville to determine the boundary between the MTA LIRR and the adjoining private ownership. Since the LIRR ROW was established in 1837, the determination of boundary locations over 182 years of development was an incredible effort by GdB. Record research from various towns and municipalities was performed to obtain relevant filed maps, deeds or property surveys for properties adjacent to the project scope area. Each map was surveyed and described in order to safeguard the property rights of adjoining owners while establishing the MTA LIRR Right of way in a modern datum. 69 individual acquisition maps were created in order to reconcile the locations of fee acquisitions, permanent and temporary easements performed in the past. Along the roughly 10 miles of existing railway, top rail elevations were measured using RTK GPS. Topographic and Planimetric survey was also provided for critical areas as specified in the project scope. GdB used all tools at our disposal to complete various tasks, including a Phantom F4 Drone. After coordination with the LIRR, air traffic control at JFK International Airport and various local authorities, GdB flew multiple flights with the Small Unmanned Aircraft System (sUAS). The F4 drone was used to photogrammetrically map eight LIRR substations, and utility mark out.

Safety

The safety of GdB employees is our top priority. Every GdB team member performing work on site completed the Roadway Worker Protection Training Course as required by 49 CFR Part 214 SubPart C of the contract. GdB field staff are also required to complete the OSHA 10-hour safety course. Safe work plans were also created, which were approved by the MTA LIRR for access to the right-of-way.
