Hear from two team members new to industry!
Salvatore Augello - Instrument Operator and Survey Technician

You didn’t have a background in surveying - what made you decide to start a career in the surveying/geospatial industry?
Last year, I was looking for a fresh start after years in the t-shirt business and then some time as a recruiter again. I was looking for something where I could feel good at the end of the day, knowing the work I was doing was having a positive and real impact on the way we live. I have always been intrigued while listening to my friends in the industry and the work they do. I wanted to be involved in a field that has a meaningful impact on society and our daily lives. I also have an overall curiosity about the way things work in the world and the work those in the surveying industry do in helping build and maintain our infrastructure.
In your opinion, what is the most interesting thing you’ve learned so far or the coolest thing you’ve done on a project?
One of the most interesting things that I have learned is researching and drafting various property records. I have a background as a history major and love to see how we got from where we did. You can get this unique window into the past that many others do not have. The coolest thing I have done on a project is the dune inspection work on Fire Island. Being down at the beach, in the winter, gives you a whole new perspective . And it’s a good feeling knowing the work we are doing on the beach helps protect nature and the people living there.
What’s your favorite part about working at GdB?
My favorite part has to be the people and how welcoming and helpful everyone has been, especially for someone who comes from a different professional background. I love getting to come to work everyday and interact with everyone. I also value greatly how the company puts their trust in you to learn, continue to want to learn, and that you’ll get your work done.
In one word, how would you describe the surveying/geospatial industry?
Motivating – motivating to learn and do the best work possible as to have a positive impact for the company and the people that we serve.
Kyle Sossong - Instrument Operator and Survey Technician
You didn’t have a background in surveying - what made you decide to start a career in the surveying/geospatial industry?
My friends Alaina and Hannah spoke very highly of the company they worked for. They spoke so highly of it I had to see it for myself. Surveying has always interested me and I’m glad that I took the leap to learn this fun and interesting career path.

In your opinion, what is the most interesting thing you’ve learned so far or the coolest thing you’ve done on a project?
The most interesting thing I have learned so far surveying would have to be how hard it is sometimes to find property corners. Its almost as it’s a mini treasure hunt. One of the coolest property corners we had to look for was the old boy scout camp on the west side of Cayuga Lake. The waterfalls and rivers made for a great background for the workweek.
What’s your favorite part about working at GdB?
My favorite part about working at GdB is by far the people I get to work with. Everyone that I’ve worked with constantly helps me learn and goes out of their way to teach me the ins and outs. Everyone has a fantastic attitude to be around which makes the days very enjoyable and easygoing.
In one word, how would you describe the surveying/geospatial industry?
One word I would use to describe the surveying/geospatial industry would have to be rewarding.
